Oberlin Track & Field turned in an impressive showing at the LC8 Championships this past week, highlighted by multiple event champions, podium finishes, and personal-best performances across both the boys and girls teams.

On the girls side, Oberlin’s sprint group led the charge with dominant performances on the track. Senior Alyssa Webb captured the LC8 title in the 100 meters, blazing to a personal-best 12.29 in the finals after qualifying first in prelims. Teammate Cayman Noble added a strong fourth-place finish in the same event.

In the 200 meters, Olivia Hudson continued her standout meet, winning the conference championship in 25.73. Webb doubled back to take third, giving Oberlin two spots on the podium. Hudson wasn’t done, as she also claimed the 400-meter title in 57.89, leading a 1-3 finish for the Phoenix with freshman Hailey Petzak placing third.

Oberlin’s relay teams were equally dominant. The 4x100 relay team of De’Shyana Freeman, Cayman Noble, Aubrey Abeyta, and Alyssa Webb raced to a conference championship in 49.72. That same core group, joined by Hudson, secured another title in the 4x200 relay (1:42.45). The success continued in the 4x400, where Abeyta, Freeman, Petzak, and Hudson combined for a first-place finish in 4:07.12, completing a sweep of all three sprint relays.

In the distance events, Oberlin showed depth and resilience. Kachina Smith led the way in the 800 meters with a fourth-place finish, while Kira Murphy followed closely in seventh. In the 1600, Phoebe Shuck and Rose Boyer placed sixth and eighth, respectively. Boyer returned in the 3200 meters to earn a fifth-place finish, while Molly Caldwell-Kepner added a seventh-place effort.

The 4x800 relay team of Phoebe Shuck, Lia Schiff, Kachina Smith, and Melody Cyrus delivered a strong second-place finish, showcasing the team’s distance strength.

In the hurdles, Breanna McConneghy qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles and placed fifth, later adding a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

Field events also contributed valuable points for the Phoenix. In the shot put, Kachina Smith and Arabella Ortiz competed for Oberlin, while in the discus, Keira Phillips was joined by Isadora Ortiz, who turned in a strong throwing performance. In the long jump, Cayman Noble soared to a conference championship with a winning mark of 16’6.5”.

On the boys side, Oberlin saw strong individual efforts, particularly in the distance events. In the 800 meters, Grant Abeyta and Collin Boardman both earned podium finishes, placing seventh and eighth with personal-best times. The duo later teamed with Peter Caldwell-Kepner and Brandon Bertoni to finish fourth in the 4x800 relay.

Bertoni also turned in a top-eight finish in the 1600 meters, placing eighth, while teammate Corwin Singleton added a 12th-place finish.

In the sprints, Marcus Ploenzke competed in both the 100 and 200 meters, gaining valuable championship experience. Isaac Spencer represented Oberlin in the 400 meters.

In the field events, Evan Lehman competed in both the shot put and discus, rounding out the Oberlin effort on the boys side.

Overall, it was a highly successful championship meet for Oberlin Track & Field, highlighted by multiple conference titles, relay dominance, and strong performances across all event groups. The Phoenix showed depth, competitiveness, and continued growth as they look ahead to postseason competition.

Next up, Oberlin will shift its focus to the postseason as they compete in the OHSAA District Championships on Thursday, May 21 and Saturday, May 23 at Cuyahoga Heights High School.
