The Oberlin track and field teams delivered another strong showing at the OHSAA District Championships, with multiple athletes earning regional qualifications and continuing postseason momentum across both the boys and girls programs.
The girls team was once again led by a dominant sprint group. Senior Alyssa Webb captured the district title in the 100-meter dash in 12.29 and followed it up with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 26.48. Aubrey Abeyta added another regional qualifying performance in the 100-meter dash, placing third in a personal-best 12.66.
Olivia Hudson had a standout meet for the Phoenix, winning the district championship in the 200-meter dash with a 25.69 and claiming another title in the 400-meter dash in 57.91. Freshman Hailey Petzak also punched her ticket to regionals with a runner-up finish in the 400 meters in a personal-best 1:00.28.
Oberlin’s relay teams continued their strong postseason run. The 4x100 relay team of Hailey Petzak, Cayman Noble, Aubrey Abeyta, and Alyssa Webb captured a district championship in 50.51 after running 50.71 in prelims. The 4x200 relay squad of Alyssa Webb, Aubrey Abeyta, Cayman Noble, and Olivia Hudson also earned a district title with a 1:44.71. The 4x400 relay team of Aubrey Abeyta, De’Shyana Freeman, Hailey Petzak, and Olivia Hudson won in 4:06.40, with Freeman running in the final after Kachina Smith helped the team qualify for the finals.
In the field events, Cayman Noble earned a district championship in the long jump with a leap of 16-4.5 to advance to regionals. Breanna McConneghy competed in both hurdle events.
Distance runners also turned in strong performances throughout the meet. Melody Cyrus placed 12th in the 800 meters in 2:50.95 after qualifying through prelims, while Kachina Smith competed in the 800-meter final as well. Phoebe Shuck finished 14th in the 1600 meters in 6:24.46, and Rose Boyer placed 16th in the 1600 before returning for a personal-best 14:07.40 and seventh-place finish in the 3200 meters. Molly Caldwell-Kepner added a personal-best performance of 14:26.36 in the 3200 meters.
The girls 4x800 relay team of Phoebe Shuck, Kira Murphy, Kachina Smith, and Melody Cyrus finished sixth overall in 11:30.25.
For the boys team, Oberlin was led by another impressive showing from its distance crew. The 4x800 relay team of Grant Abeyta, Peter Caldwell-Kepner, Brandon Bertoni, and Collin Boardman placed third overall in 8:39.57 to qualify for regionals.
Grant Abeyta also earned a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:10.20, while teammate Collin Boardman finished seventh in 2:11.14 after both advanced through prelims. Peter Caldwell-Kepner took sixth in the 1600 meters in 4:52.10, and Brandon Bertoni added an 11th-place finish in 5:10.99.
Marcus Ploenzke competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, running 12.90 and a personal-best 26.20. Isaac Spencer posted a 58.54 in the 400 meters, and Evan Lehman competed in the shot put with a throw of 30-11.5.
Additional performances included Arabella Ortiz competing in the girls shot put and Isadora Ortiz.
The Phoenix will now send a large group of athletes on to the OHSAA Regional Championships as both teams continue an outstanding postseason run.
