Oberlin High School boys basketball head coach Kurt Russell reached a major milestone this season, earning the 200th win of his coaching career on December 13 with a victory over Lake Ridge Academy.
Coach Russell’s impact on Oberlin basketball spans nearly three decades. He has served as the Oberlin High School head coach for 19 years, building a program rooted in consistency, accountability, and pride. Prior to leading the varsity program, Russell spent 10 years coaching at Langston Middle School, helping develop countless student-athletes who would later wear the orange and black at the high school level.
The Oberlin community officially celebrated Coach Russell’s accomplishment on January 6 during a home game against Black River. The night was made even more special as alumni returned to the gym to honor the legacy of the program and the coach who helped shape it. Oberlin capped the celebration by pulling away for a strong home victory, fittingly marking the milestone with a win.
Coach Russell’s 200 wins reflect far more than numbers on a scoreboard—they represent years of dedication, mentorship, and commitment to Oberlin student-athletes. Oberlin is proud to have Coach Russell leading its boys basketball program and grateful for the lasting impact he continues to make on the school and community.
